In 1923 an earthquake destroyed most of the buildings in Zelve Valley – but luckily many were still standing when the area was declared an open-air museum in 1957. Since then archaeologists have uncovered more than 50 churches with beautiful frescoes on their walls – some dating back to 7th century AD! There’s also several rock-cut structures like monasteries, chapels and dwellings carved into limestone cliffs that make for beautiful photo ops.
