BIRD PARADISE OF CAPPADOCIA
About Sultan Sazlığı
Sultan Marshes is the name given to the wetland covering an area of 8-13 hectares, located approximately 70 kilometers south of Kayseri. It is located between Develi-Yeşilhisar-Yahyalı districts. Erciyes Mountain, one of the highest mountains of the Cappadocia region, is located to the west of the Sultan Marshes. Most of the wetland is covered with reeds. In some places, plants such as reed, head grass and kana are also found. In sunny weather, it is possible to come across irises and lotus flowers. There are many floating reed islets in the center of the reed. These islets are displaced by the effect of strong winds and they descend with the lowering of the water.
Sultan Marshes contain fresh and salt water ecosystems, which are rarely seen in the steppe ecosystem. It is one of the most important wetlands in Turkey due to its rich biological diversity within the Central Anatolia steppe ecosystem and the intersection of the two main bird migration routes between Africa and Europe used by migratory birds in this area.
There are 600 thousand ducks, geese, flamingos and a wide variety of birds in Sultan Marshes. 251 bird species were found in the researches carried out in 1986. It has been determined that more than 80 of these bird species are incubating in Sultan Marshes.
Guests coming to Cappadocia have the opportunity to visit this bird paradise in summer. Sultan Marshes are a great destination for those who want to photograph birds and spend a peaceful day in touch with nature.
