SARUHAN CARAVANSERAI

ABOUT SARUHAN CARAVANSERAI

Saruhan Caravanserai is a 14th century caravanserai located in the region of Cappadocia, Turkey. It is a well-preserved example of the type of inn that was built along trade routes during the medieval period. Caravanserais were built to provide accommodation and protection for merchants and their animals as they traveled along these routes.

The Saruhan Caravanserai is a large, rectangular building with a central courtyard. The entrance is through a grand portal and leads to the courtyard, which is surrounded by a two-story gallery with rooms for merchants and their animals. The rooms on the upper level were used for accommodation and the ones on the lower level were used to house animals. The caravanserai also had a mosque and a bathhouse. The courtyard is surrounded by arches and columns, and there is a small fountain in the center.

The caravanserai was built during the reign of the Seljuk Turks, and it was an important stop for traders traveling between Konya and Aksaray. It was also used as a military barracks during the Ottoman period. The caravanserai was restored in the 1980s and it is now open to visitors as a historical and cultural attraction in the region.

It's an important touristic place in Cappadocia with its unique architectural features and history. Visitors can have a chance to explore the caravanserai, learn about its history and the way of life of merchants who used to stay in such inns during their long-distance trade journey.

It's also worth mentioning that Cappadocia, the region where Saruhan Caravanserai located, is famous for its unique rock formations, fairy chimneys, underground cities and cave dwellings. So, it would be a good idea to combine a visit to Saruhan Caravanserai with a tour of the other attractions in the region.
